case study 1 - portable vibration monitoring
The problem:
A leading multinational oil company approached RCM Marine to supply a portable vibration monitoring system for use in a new 115,000 dwt vessel. Due to timescales and budgetary considerations, the client requested that the solution should be provided from data supplied by the vessel’s Superintendent. In practice this meant that RCM had to supply a solution within a short timeframe and without visiting the ship.
The solution:
RCM Marine’s Mariner system was considered the optimum solution for data collection and monitoring, with machinery vibration data collected on board and sent direct to RCM, via the built in e-mail function.
From data analysis conducted, initial pre-alarm and main alarm levels were checked against actual vibration levels and adjusted as necessary. The database was quickly modified and returned to ship.
In addition, through its expert technical team, RCM Marine provided additional support to the client, who was experiencing major vibration problems thought to be originating from the main engine.
RCM Marine was able to build and supply additional database components, together with simple installation and usage instructions. Data was then returned from the ship, further analysed and recommendations were passed to the Superintendent Engineer for approval, which were subsequently passed.
Additionally, a query was received from the ship’s engineers, via the Superintendent regarding the possibility of using RCM Mariner to dynamically balance machinery. RCM Marine confirmed that this was feasible with its Mariner solution. Vibration data on the machine in question was requested and, when received, was analysed to confirm imbalance was the problem. A further database component was built specifically for the machine, together with easy to follow instructions and vibration plotting sheets. This was then forwarded to the ship to rebalance the machine.
