case study 1 - diesel electric powered tankers
The problem:
A large fleet of diesel electric powered chemical tankers were experiencing turbocharger failures and approached RCM Marine with a requirement for a turbocharger monitoring system that would provide the duty engineer with a clear and immediate indication of exactly which turbocharger was in distress, enabling quick and effective remedial action.

The company also stated that all analysis parameters should trended and data examined periodically by RCM Engineers.

The solution:
A four channel RCM Voyager system was installed on a vessel with the administrator software running as a server application on the ship's network. Each turbocharger analysis was fully synchronised with turbocharger RPM by taking a trigger signal from the tachometers.

Regular trend data is transmitted daily and automatically as an attachment by the vessel's mail system. In the event of a pre or main alarm an alert is sent to the ship's UMS alarm system, indicating the occurrence of a turbocharger vibration alarm and the number of the turbocharger that initiated the alarm. A fault diagnosis message is also concurrently sent via the ship's network to the Chief Engineer and the engine control room.
