What are the benefits of condition monitoring?
- Many machines are overhauled on a 'number of hours' basis (and never work so well again!) The old adage "If it ain't broke don't fix it" applies.
- The majority of Classification Societies accept, on application and on an individual vessel basis, switching from a planned maintenance to a predictive maintenance strategy. Benefits in this context are not opening up machines simply for inspection.
- More focussed work at drydockings.
- Benefits can be gained from Class by not having to lift Turbine/Gearbox covers for inspection at dry-docking of LNG vessels.
- With modern day tight schedules the ability to plan maintenance work in advance can result in significant benefits by being able to carry out maintenance in appropriate ports or anchorages.
